Periodontal Care

Diagram of periodontitis and health toothPeriodontal disease is an infection in the mouth that can cause many problems. Without the proper treatment early on, this infection can spread and will need special treatment. With the help of some of our dental team, we can treat and care for the periodontal disease and make the infection go away. If you suspect you may have periodontal disease, Capital Dental Center can provide the right treatment for you.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease will include any infections in the structures around the teeth, including the gums, but not the actual teeth themselves. In addition to finding these infections in the gums, they may show up in the alveolar bone and the periodontal ligament.

These infections may progress from gingivitis, which often affects just the gums, but without visiting our office and treating the gingivitis, it can move to other structures in the mouth. Proper dental care is one of the best ways to prevent these infections.

Periodontal diseases are caused most often by a combination of dental plaque and bacteria. Some of the symptoms that our patients may notice include gum recession, loose teeth, teeth that are suddenly sensitive, persistent bad breath, and swollen and bleeding gums.

Treating Periodontal Disease

Our dentists can choose between several phases of treatment to help you handle periodontal disease. The phase used will depend on how bad the infection is when you come to visit our office. The different phases of treatment for periodontal disease include Etiological, Surgical, and Maintenance Phases.

During the first phase, The Etiological Phase, our team will focus on controlling the infection that is present and will restore as much of the healthy microbiota that should be there. Our team will also do an exam to see what may be causing this infection so you can address the root of the problem and prevent it from happening again. Our team will educate you so you can continue treatment at home and will do a deep clean in the mouth to deeply clean the teeth and remove plaque.

If the first set of treatments are not effective at helping treat the periodontal disease, then our team will discuss some of the surgical options in the Surgical phase. This may be chosen if the pockets of infection or plaque are too hard to clean. Our team will wait between four and eight weeks after the initial treatment before discussing this treatment.

During the Maintenance Phase, our team will work with you to prevent the infection from returning. Without proper maintenance, it is more likely the disease will come back. We will discuss all of the oral hygiene practices you should follow to keep the mouth clean and prevent the infection from coming back again.

Taking care of your oral health is one of the best ways to prevent periodontal disease in the first place. If you are dealing with gingivitis or another infection, it is important to take care of it right away.
