Reasons to Get Dental Cleaning

Teeth cleaning helps prevent cavities. Regular dental cleaning from our dentists will help to remove the plaque that naturally builds up on the teeth over time. While plaque can be removed through flossing and brushing, our office can provide dental cleanings that help make sure no part of the mouth is missed.

Teeth cleaning helps prevent tooth loss. Gum disease is a major reason that adults lose teeth as they get older. Gum disease is preventable with a regular dental cleaning. A cleaning can help brighten your smile. Eating and drinking can stain the teeth. Our dentists can provide dental cleaning that helps brighten that smile and makes your teeth whiter. It can also help boost your overall health. Healthy teeth lead to good health all over the body.

What Happens During a Dental Exam?

There are a few steps our office will take during the dental cleaning process. We will start with a physical dental exam done by our qualified dental hygienist. They will use a small mirror to check around the gums and teeth to get a better idea of where to start during the cleaning. This should only take a few minutes.

After a quick look around the mouth, our dental hygienist will start to get rid of any plaque and tartar around the gumline and between your teeth. This is often the part that takes the longest, but regular brushing and flossing can help keep plaque and tartar away, helping the cleaning process along.

The Cleaning Process

Once our dental hygienist is sure your teeth are completely free of tartar, they will use a high-powered electric brush to deep clean the teeth and remove any of the tartar that is left behind from the cleaning. Our office uses toothpaste that can help polish the teeth and keep them clean.

While brushing your teeth, our dentists will go through your mouth and floss between the teeth. This will help them see any potential trouble spots, especially on the gums, that you need to take care of too. Even if you floss regularly at home, this is a good step to remove anything left behind during the cleaning process.

To finish the cleaning, we will rinse out the mouth and apply fluoride. This is an important step because it protects your teeth from cavities and other tooth decay for several months or longer. We will leave the fluoride treatment on your teeth for a minute and it is safe to eat or drink within a few minutes after the treatment is applied.

Other Steps

Depending on how the cleaning goes, our team may decide to add additional steps to the tooth-cleaning process. For example, our dentists may decide to do x-rays or an additional exam to take a closer look at your mouth. For children, we may recommend molar sealants or other preventative measures to keep the cavities away.

It is important to schedule regular teeth cleaning to clear away plaque and tartar and keep your teeth healthy. When you are ready to schedule your teeth cleaning, call or text Capital Dental Center at 202-978-8778 today.
